Marof

The story of the mill under the Marof Waterfall

At the House under the Waterfall homestead, you can experience the synergies of the primeval environment of the Kozjansko region, the remote greenness of wonderful Slovenia, and sense peace and tranquillity in harmony with nature as you perform age-old milling activities. Right next to the homestead, the 8-metre Marof Waterfall descends down a mighty rock wall; there, you can enjoy the sound of water and millwheels giving you a sense of inner peace that will relax you and detach you from the urban hustle and bustle and give you time to meditate and take a deep look inside of yourself.

The mighty waterfall has created the perfect conditions for reviving milling activities. The ground floor contains three renovated millwheels that tell the stories of the milling of various grains, some going as far back as the time of the Carthusians. At the mill itself, selected grains from nearby crop growers can be ground, and you can take the ground flour with you or bake delicious bread in the kitchen of the House under the Waterfall. The physical labour at the mill will also temporarily transport you away from daily stress and create a balance of the inner energy of the body and the spirit.

The upper floors contain the residential part that was renovated in a modern, yet still very local style that harks back to the golden age of the mill.

The mill as it once was

The mill as it once was

Since the time of the Carthusians, a mill has been located at the foot of a hillside next to the waterfall. According to oral tradition, mill stones were driven by various wooden millwheels for centuries, but in the early 20th century they were replaced by a water turbine manufactured at the Štore Ironworks.

Throughout centuries, the stream powered the millwheel and the saw in the old mill. The old mill was later replaced by a newer mill, and the bed of the stream also slightly changed. In the bottom part of the building, three renovated millstones now turn, and the residential part was renovated in a modern, yet still very local style that harks back to the golden age of the mill.

Grind some grain and get a sense of milling

The mighty waterfall has created ideal conditions for the operation of an old mill in modern times. Three renovated millwheels in the ground floor tell stories of the grinding of various grains from the time when the Carthusians were still here.

If you stay we will introduce you to milling in a practical way–you will be able to grind various types of crops yourself (under the watchful eye of the miller at Marof). You will experience milling in the countryside, and you will be able to take the products with you and bake your own bread from the freshly ground flour.
